leukemiainhibitory factor (lif) is a polyfunctional cytokine withmultiple effects on a broad range of cell type, including monocyte,megakaryocytes, neuronal cells, embryonal stem cells, hepatocutes,adipocytes and osteoblasts. lif stimulates thedifferentiation of the macrophage cell line m1, and theproliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. in vivo, it hasprofound effects on hematopoiesis, particularly in combination withother cytokines such as il-3, causing increased platelet formation.lif allows embryonic stem cells to remain in anundifferentiated state and can maintain their proliferation inculture. lif stimulates synthesis of acute phase proteins byliver cells, increases bone resorption, stimulates differentiationof cholinergic nerves and loss of body fat. the mature proteincontains 180 amino acid residues, several potential glycosylationsites and three disulfide bonds.
